Huang Cen Ling and Tenement House — Eileen Chang

Huangcenling is a pond in my ancestral village in Hunan, co-built by my grandmother. The Tong Lau corridor was my grandfather’s residence in Hong Kong, a space he personally curated. Both are beautiful legacies left to me by my elders. By merging them, I envision my grandparents joining hands to create a flourishing world for future generations.

In this composition, the serene pond of Hunan unfolds before the Hong Kong corridor. Against this backdrop, I weave in the story of Eileen Chang. Known for her meticulous depictions of Hong Kong’s urban culture, her passion for fashion, and her profound insight into the nuances of human nature, Chang becomes the perfect soul to inhabit this “sutured” space—a bridge between family memory and cultural history.

Clad in an impeccable purple robe, Eileen Chang carves out a serene, pristine, and imaginative sanctuary of lakes and mountains from a bustling corner of the world. In this space, she calmly embraces a moment of profound wisdom found only in solitude.

Eileen Chang’s microscopic and exquisite sensibilities capture the very texture of refined Asian living.
